Friends and Colleagues: Plurality and NP-Coordination
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper presents a set of largely novel data concerning conjunction inside the noun phrase, and shows how this little-studied domain includes structures with readings which are quite unexpected under any current theory of coordination. Moreover, these readings vary across languages in an interesting and systematic fashion. To address this problem, we outline a new proposal for the interpretation of conjunction that can handle these data, but can also, we believe, be extended to the whole phenomenon of coordination. We deduce the cross-linguistic variation from an independently motivated theory of the syntax-to-semantics mapping, in which a parametric difference exists in the way that natural languages obtain the semantics of number, starting from the same set of functional projections within the DP. Our analysis is intended partly as a case-study in the interplay between the syntax and semantics of functional heads; the account of conjunction that we develop provides a tool for further syntactic and semantic analysis of the DP.

Friends and colleagues: Plurality, coordination, and the structure of DP
Starting from an analysis for the diverging crosslinguistic grammaticality of DP-internal conjunctions such as this [man and woman] are in love, the article develops a theory of the syntax/semantics interface within the DP and a novel proposal for the interpretation of conjunction. The main claims are that plural/mass denotations are built in stages within the DP, by the combined effect of numb...
متن کاملHandling Plurality in Bengali Noun Phrases
Plurality of a Bengali Noun Phrase (NP) is not always determined by the plurality of its governing member (or the head). It is often seen that an NP is plural but the plurality is indicated through qualifiers or other means whereas the head noun has the singular form. In such scenarios, the plurality of the NP is determined by analyzing its non-head members or from other components (or context)...
متن کاملTrembling Hand Equilibria of Plurality Voting
Trembling hand (TH) equilibria were introduced by Selten in 1975. Intuitively, these are Nash equilibria that remain stable when players assume that there is a small probability that other players will choose off-equilibrium strategies. This concept is useful for equilibrium refinement, i.e., selecting the most plausible Nash equilibria when the set of all Nash equilibria can be very large, as ...
متن کاملTowards a Dichotomy of Finding Possible Winners in Elections Based on Scoring Rules
To make a joint decision, agents (or voters) are often required to provide their preferences as linear orders. To determine a winner, the given linear orders can be aggregated according to a voting protocol. However, in realistic settings, the voters may often only provide partial orders. This directly leads to the POSSIBLE WINNER problem that asks, given a set of partial votes, if a distinguis...
